Evaluation: Bike & Ped Safety, I-Mall at Corbett

NMSU Pedestrian & Bike Safety Review

A pedestrian and bicyclist safety survey was conducted by EH&S on the International Mall at Corbett Center (see map) during Feb/Mar 2012.

The I-mall is a primary pedestrian East-West walkway from several large housing units and main parking lots on the east side of the campus to the central campus area.  It was selected also with several other campus locations as locations where close encounters with bicyclist & skateboard had been noted. This location is an area with high volume of pedestrians [peaks up to 1000 peds/hour and averaging 466 peds/hour].

This survey was conducted during peak pedestrian use, e.g. business hours (8am-4:30pm) Tuesday through Friday, from February 2 to 27, 2012.  Observers recorded bicycle usage, pedestrian safety concerns (close pedestrian to bicyclist encounters), bicycle safety concerns and traffic violations at 15 minute intervals.  The counts for each item were summed to 60 minutes interval and averaged over the week. Bicycle counts approached peaks of 120 to 140 bicyclist /hour.

The surveys found the following:
